"And I've come here to this city of hope because the tests of our time demand the same fighting spirit that defined Berlin, a half century ago. Chancellor Merkel mentioned that we mark the anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's stirring defence of freedom, embodied in the people of this great city. STORYLINE:
The Mayor of Berlin and Germany's Chancellor welcomed US President Barack Obama to Berlin on Wednesday who was cheered at the historic Brandenburg Gate by a crowd of 6,000 invited guests.
Obama made reference to a speech by John F. Kennedy in the city almost exactly 50 years ago, where he identified himself with Berliners who had to live with the Berlin Wall dividing their city.
"His pledge of solidarity, 'Ich bin ein Berliner,' echoes through the ages," Obama said, referring to Kennedy's famous pledge of solidarity.
After joking about the extreme temperature Obama repeated the JFK line verbatim, saying that his visit to the city was a pledge of his own solidarity in these testing times.
Speaking at the city's iconic landmark, a powerful symbol of the Cold War, Obama also spoke about the need for a one-third reduction of the U.S. and Russia's nuclear stockpiles.
