So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. — John 8:36
On this day in American history, we celebrate freedom. It's a story of freedom that is an inseparable part of our history.
But there is more consequential freedom than independence from some oppressive political system. It's a freedom that is even freer. It's a freedom we can have while being mistreated for our beliefs, race, or gender. It's a freedom that we can enjoy while suffering through an unjust circumstance. It's the freedom of the soul. And there is nothing quite like this freedom.
And because this world is so oppressed by injustice, abuse, evil, prejudice, inequity, and favoritism, the only way to find this freedom is to have someone outside our system who is truly free to reveal and extend this freedom to us. And the Bible teaches that God revealed this freedom to us through His Son, Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus is the one who can set us free. That was His job. He came to set the captives free.
Listen to this text. It appears in both the Old and New Testaments:
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed. — Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18
Jesus came to proclaim freedom. But He didn't just proclaim it — He actually provided it. He set all mankind free. And like all freedom, it came at a cost. His cost. He paid for our freedom so that we can freely have freedom. And this freedom is ours if we want it.
So today, if you are looking for freedom, you can have it. You can be set free. Free from your sin, its guilt, and all lingering shame. It's soul freedom that is greater than any circumstance you will ever encounter.
So celebrate our national freedom today. But remember, national freedoms will not last forever. These circumstances are sure to change. Get to know real freedom. Soul freedom. And be free regardless of what circumstances may come.
ASK THIS:
1. How does the concept of soul freedom differ from external circumstances or national independence?
2. In what ways can we actively live in the liberation and freedom that Christ has provided?
DO THIS: Praise Him for freedom, and thank a Veteran today.
PRAY THIS: God, I am incredibly grateful for the freedom You have bestowed upon me through Your Son, Jesus. Thank You for setting me free and giving me the opportunity to live a life of liberation and purpose.
PLAY THIS: Where I Find God.
