On This Day 1963: Alfred Hitchcock: "Actors Are Cattle"
On This Day 1963, acclaimed British filmmaker and 'Master of Suspense' Alfred Hitchcock spoke to ITN's Kent Barker about the making of his new film, 'The Birds'.
He spoke to Barker about how working with actors compared to working with crows on set. Hitchcock was known for a controlling, borderline-sadistic style of direction - particularly towards his female stars - that would not be tolerated today.
It's best exemplified in the experience of 'The Birds' leading lady, Tippi Hedren. As well as being traumatised during filming of the infamous 'attic scene' in the film's climax, Hedren's career suffered after she rejected Hitchcock's unwanted sexual advances.
Hitchcock's reputation has rightly been revised in the decades since his death. His films, however, retain their iconic status, and serve as case studies in the age-old debate about whether it's possible to separate the art from the artist.
