Hiking from Thorsmork to Skogafoss through the night.
------------------------------------
Here’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a few years, but never thought I’d have the time or flexibility whilst in Iceland to achieve it, so I was so excited to be able to hike the Fimmvorduhals Trail. Starting with a bus into Thorsmork we began at the Volcano Huts, hiking out to Basar before starting the climb up and out of Thorsmork. Finding ourselves in thick fog, we began to think that we weren’t going to be getting any views of the landscape for the whole hike, until we pierced through the top of the cloud and were treated to the most incredible sunset.
Pushing on we made our way up to Modi and the area between Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull, stopping off at the mountain huts before starting the long descent towards the coast. The entire walk downhill from the glaciers is lined with many impressive and staggering waterfalls, which makes it very different but equally as beautiful as the rest of the walk. Finally after many, many hours and another beautiful sunrise we made it to Skogafoss, quickly taking in the sights before climbing into our tents for some much needed sleep.

This trip will likely go down as the best I ever do. So many experiences, moments and memories helped to make this much more than the bucket list trip it was supposed to be. After a year of lockdown, reduced travel and many postponed/cancelled plans, we decided to just go to Iceland and give ourselves an experience to remember.
