The families of those who died in the Nottingham attacks have expressed their anger after triple killer Valdo Calocane was given a hospital order. At Nottingham Crown Court, Judge Mr Justice Turner, sentenced Valdo Calocane to an indefinite hospital order following his pleas of guilty to 3 charges of manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility and 3 charges of attempted murder.
In this video, I am going to explain the Judge’s sentencing remarks to explain why he came to the sentence he did and explain what the sentence means for the Defendant.
In most high profile criminal cases, the Judge’s sentencing remarks are published online for all those who want to read to understand the rationale behind the sentence they have arrived at. Judges are often criticised when sentences are reported without the details and explanations being understood of how they arrived at that sentence. There will, of course be many people who believe that he should have been tried for murder and will never accept that his pleas for manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility should have been accepted. This video is not to argue the merits, but merely to explain how the Judge awarded the sentence he did. I did do a separate video where I explain the difference between murder and manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility if you want to check that out and I’ll put a link in the description.
