Romanee St. Vivant is a specific vineyard located in Burgundy, in the sub region of Cote de Nuits and in the commune of Vosne Romanee.
Romanee St. Vivant is on lower slope; whereas neighboring Romanee Conti and Richebourg are on hillside. It is bordered by La Romanée (Grand Cru vineyard) in the south, Romanée-Conti and Richebourg (Grand Cru vineyards) in the west, Les Suchots (Premier Cru vineyard) in the north and La Croix-Rameau and Les Gaudichots (Premier Cru vineyards) in the east. The Romanee St. Vivant AOC was created in 1936 (before that it was just part of Vosne Romanee.
The region takes its name after the Abbey of Saint Vivant (you can still see the ruins of the abbey today). I haven't been able to trace where the name Romanee came from but the entire region was known as Romanee.
After the French Revolution, the entire vineyard of Romanée Saint-Vivant was bought by Nicolas-Joseph Marey, son-in-law of the geometer Gaspard Monge in 1791. It was owned by the Marey-Monge family for over 100 years but in 1898, a large chunk of the southern part of the vineyards was sold to the Latour family in 1898. The Latour family sold off about half of their holdings in Romanee St. Vivant over the years. Then the Marey-Monge family sold off over part (northern most part) of the vineyard to the Noellat family. In 1966, the last member of the Marey-Monge family leased the remaining 5.28 hectares (13.0 acres) to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and also gave them an option to buyers this land if it ever came up for sale. In 1988, the remaining Marey-Monge holdings in Romanee St. Vivant was sold to Domaine de la Romanee Conti. DRC sold some of their holdings in Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux to pay for these lands.
Almost all red wine produced from Romanée-Saint-Vivant is red wine made from the Pinot Noir grape. However, the AOC regulations allow up to 15 per cent of the vineyard to be accessory grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris)
The entire region is only 9.4 hectares (23.0 acres), producing around 3,000 cases of wine for the entire vineyard in total. The owners of the vineyards in Romanee St. Vivant are:
