An ambition of mine was to one day see water flowing at the source of the River Thames at Trewsbury Mead near Kemble in Gloucestershire. For much of the year the source is bone dry. Water only flows from springs at the source if the groundwater in the limestone aquifers of the Cotswolds is sufficiently high & this is generally after a sustained period of wet weather.
I've walked the Thames Path in 2020, 2021 and 2022 but each time I started or ended at the source in late spring or summer. On each time the source was completely dry.
After a lot of rain at the end of 2022 I decided to visit the source in January 2023 and sure enough, I was greeted with the sight I was hoping to see - a spring gurgling away right by the marker stone and water everywhere.
It was too windy to use my drone on the day of my visit, so with lighter winds I went back a week later to capture footage of the river flowing from the source, under the roadbridge on the A433 and on to the roadbridge on the A429 at Kemble. Video best viewed in 4K.
