This past weekend I ran into a vehicle prepping situation that I thought I should document for my YouTube channel. The check engine light came on my car when I was driving home from a family BBQ and I was not prepared on how to handle this situation. Should I continue to drive home with it on and possibly risk damaging the engine? Should I pull over and have the car inspected before continuing on, even with Baby Prepper and the family anxiously waiting to go home?
What I really needed was a Trilingual OBD II & CAN Scan Tool to read my vehicle computer diagnostic code to find out what the check engine light was representing. This item is a great addition to a Car EDC for situations exactly like this. When teamed with a Smartphone, it could be a powerful source of information that can let you know if your check engine light is on because of something minor (Ex: gas cap is off) or some major (timing belt issue). I have had one of the scanners on my Amazon Wish List for months, but I never purchased it because of the price. I wish I would have purchased it sooner, because when I really needed it, I didn't have it.
In this video I talk about me check engine light situation, purchase the Actron CP9575 AutoScanner OBD II Scan Tool and use it to determine what the check engine light code was representing on my Honda Element.
