Today we remember Khalid Jabara and Heather Heyer, who were killed in white supremacist attacks on this day in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Yet, these tragedies were not recorded as hate crimes in federal reports.
So their families worked together with those of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. to make sure their loved ones COUNTED, leading to the passage of the Jabara-Heyer NO HATE Act in May 2021.
Passage of this bill is an important victory, but more must be done to prevent and investigate white nationalist violence. Congress must hold white supremacists accountable for their actions and ensure accurate hate crime reporting at all levels so communities have the resources they need to prevent future violence. All people deserve to feel safe. #WhiteSupremacyKills
