Veterans Benefits Attorney Megan Kondrachuk explains "VA Math," reading the VA's Combined Rating Table, and how to calculate your total VA disability rating after you've received ratings for multiple conditions.
Many Veterans think the VA simply adds their disparate ratings together, but in fact, they use a specific calculation to combine them. There are numerous calculators available for Veterans to plug in their ratings, but the Department of Veterans Affairs provides a simple chart as well.
It's important to note that if your multiple ratings combine to a specific integer, the VA will calculate it rounding to the nearest 10. For example, if a Veteran's combined rating is 76, according to the chart, the VA will deem their combined rating to be 80. Likewise, if a Veteran has a combined rating of 71, then the VA will round their rating down to 70.
