The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) will take place in Glasgow on 1-12 November 2021. This UN climate summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
COP26 is considered significant as it provides an opportunity for nations to review their commitments in terms of Nationally Determined Contributions and long-term (mid-century) GHG reduction strategies and to strengthen ambition. The concept of net-zero emissions, often with a specific target date, is a key element of the discussion around low-emission pathways and the energy transition under the Paris Agreement.
As part of the energy transition, IPIECA member companies are also regularly updating their GHG reduction commitments. Compared to 15-18 months ago, when only one or two IPIECA members had declared net-zero ambitions, more than half of IPIECA members have now declared a net-zero ambition or aspiration by 2050 or a variation thereof.
Following a keynote introduction by Mark Radka of the UN Environment Programme, this interactive, virtual roundtable examines the topic of the energy transition and net-zero emissions through three lenses:
1. Investors and international organizations - with speakers from Allianz Investment Management, Transition Pathway Initiative, the World Economic Forum and the World Resources Institute.
2. Regional perspectives - to illustrate that the energy transition will take a different shape around the world including a spotlight on the Middle East, Africa and India, with speakers from Chatham House, the African Refiners and Distributors Association, and the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry.
3. Industry initiatives - with updates from the oil and gas sector (IPIECA, the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative) and a global business view from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
