Hello there, all you absolutely magnificent people, and welcome to another episode of An Ecologist Plays, where we play games and talk about nature! In today's episode, we are back in Empires of the Undergrowth, and amazing game developed by Slug Disco, and we are taking on the fourth mission! Our Formica fusca colony was established above the spring high tide mark, but we are facing increasingly intensive opposition from two nearby ant colonies, who established closer to shore, and are now being flooded by the rising tide. The protection of our herd of cattle (aphids) is crucial for this mission, and we do our best to protect them and our queen against all kinds of threats. While doing that, of course, we discuss why ants do this aphid-farming, two types of competition, what life is like on the sandy shore, what eusociality is, and a few other things as well. Oh, end we do the second experiment!
If you have any questions about the game or any of the creatures we encounter, please pop them down in the comments below, and I will do my best to answer.
