Making Oxygen in the Laboratory
how to make oxygen
---
Today, we will learn about the process of making oxygen in the laboratory.
First, we need potassium permanganate (KMnO4), a common chemical compound that is readily available.
For this experiment, we will take a clean and dry test tube and add potassium permanganate to it. About 2 to 3 grams of potassium permanganate will be sufficient.
Now, secure this test tube in a test tube holder so that it doesn't fall. Next, we will gently heat the test tube. For this, we can use a Bunsen burner or an alcohol lamp.
Due to the heat, the potassium permanganate starts to decompose, releasing oxygen gas. This process happens gradually, so be patient.
Now, we need to collect this oxygen gas. Take another clean test tube and invert it in a container filled with water. Make sure the mouth of the tube is submerged in the water.
As the oxygen gas is produced and released, it displaces the water and collects in the tube. You will observe that the water level in the test tube decreases while the gas level increases.
Once a sufficient amount of oxygen gas has been collected, carefully remove the test tube from the container, ensuring the gas does not escape.
This is how we prepare oxygen gas in the laboratory.
