Clayburgh was at the peak of her stardom when she played fictional math professor Kate Gunzinger in the 1980 romantic comedy It's My Turn, directed by Claudia Weill. The film and Clayburgh were under-rated. Michael Douglas and Charles Grodin, not in this scene, co-starred. Screenplay by Eleanor Bergstein.
Here, the professor demonstrates the snake lemma of mathematics (with objections by her student Cooperman, played by Daniel Stern). In a comment, @DrewMelman-Rogers noted that the film "takes place in the late 1970s in Chicago, which at the time was the category-theoretic equivalent of Mecca...."
