From [ Ссылка ] - Native plants and nature bring bees, pollinators and direct economic benefits to farms. Kristen and James Miskelly of Saanich Native Plants at Haliburton Farm in Victoria, BC describe how planting native plants and restoring habitat can transform a farm.
Incorporating natural habitat with sustainable farming brings many benefits: increased pollination, food productivity, soil fertility, natural pest management, protective microclimates for crops, native blossoms that beautify the landscape, and a diversity of bees!
At a time when bees, insects and birds are in decline, natural habitat is key.
“Bring back the pollinators, but bring back the birds and the butterflies and the snakes and the plants themselves,” said James Miskelly. By restoring habitat with native plants, the insects, birds and animals follow.
At Haliburton, in addition to crop growing areas, one-fifth of the land on the farm is set aside for nature. This includes several distinct habitats: a small woodland, two ponds, a wetland meadow and a dry meadow. Each habitat area attracts beneficial animals, birds, and insects, including a wide range of pollinators which benefit the farm.
