The old Google Plus interface had Hangouts and Hangouts on Air only separated via a check-box check (tick)... Now the HOA start up area is in a place of its own and the Hangouts you were used to are now called Hangout Video Calls (and start from the upper right Green Quote thingy called "Hangouts" - which include text (aka Messaging).
