Historically infections have come in different waves. Plague and small pox are examples i which 1st, 2nd and 3rd waves were present. Currently we are experiencing 3rd wave of covid-19 infections. It is expected that we would see a 4th wave in covid-19 infections. This is due to the emergence of varriants from UK, Brazil and South Africa.
Countries where at least 70-80% of citizens would be vaccinated could make the status of covid-19 infections similar to seasonal infections like influenza. But there are countries especially the poor and under developed countries where covid-19 vaccine would not be available till mid 2022.
