Join me for a quick toxic Jack O’ Lantern fungi ID tutorial. You want to know this toxic Chanterelle lookalike so you can avoid it. It fruits in mid summer - fall. When attempting to identify wild mushrooms always use multiple sources. You are solely responsible for any ID you make.
Jacks have decurrent but true gills. (Mistated in video) true gills are structures you and pick off and remove
Chants have decurrent false gills. False gills are more like ridges and a solid part of the structures they are on (cap and stem)
**Jacks fruit in large clumps on rotting wood.**
Chants are mycorhizzal with hardwoods like oak and beech and fruit singly or in groups of 2-4 at most
Jacks cap and stem are a stiking orange color which when cut open runs through the stem
Chants have paler yellow/orange caps and often times have lighter stems which when cut open are white inside.
