Learning how (and when) to use idioms in French will get you one step closer to fluency.
This video, from our expert teacher Tania, will help you learn a variety of different French expressions and their meanings in English.
The lesson covers 18 common French idioms for beginners, including idioms about relationships, weather, money, and more.
For example, have you ever heard a French speaker say, “Coûter les yeux de la tête”? This means that something "costs an arm and a leg," but literally it translates to: "it costs the eyes of the head"!
Remember that each of these funny French sayings won’t translate literally. Idioms are groups of words that have a different meaning than what you’ll find in a dictionary.
So the more you hear and practice using these French phrases in the right context, the more you’ll sound like a native speaker.
