This device, probably from the 1950s, fits into a standard B22 bayonet bulb holder and it was designed to be used for Christmas light sets, with a rating of 30-40 watts. I would imagine having lights flashing on and off, with this, would shorten the bulb life, as when an incandescent bulb is switched on, it weakens the filament slightly every time.
