STORYLINE
Hundreds of people protesting against the South Korea-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA) clashed with police in Seoul on Tuesday following the ruling party's sudden ratification of the long-stalled trade deal earlier in the day.
Protesters occupied streets for a candlelight vigil and march holding anti FTA signs and flags, but police buses and water cannon lined-up to stop them.
Police say they warned protesters several times to stop the march and return home and scuffles broke out when they refused.
Police used water cannon in an attempt to disperse the protesters who stood their ground covered by umbrellas and waterproof clothing.
One protester stood defiant in front of the water canon with his arms outstretched while another was in tears.
Police carried away several protesters for questioning.
The protesters were calling on the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to resign and they also said that the trade bill with the US was not acceptable.
South Korea's parliament ratified the long-stalled deal with the United States on Tuesday after ruling party lawmakers forced a vote amid shouts and shoves from opposition rivals.
Lawmakers voted 151 to 7 in favour of ratifying the agreement in a last-minute vote called by the ruling Grand National Party.
President Lee Myung-bak's ruling party commands a majority in South Korea's single-chamber, 295-seat parliament but hadn't forced the deal through earlier, apparently out of worry over a public backlash ahead of next year's presidential and parliamentary elections.
Lawmakers have been wrangling over the free trade deal since US Congress and President Barack Obama approved the deal last month after years of divisive debate in the U.S.
Opposition lawmakers say the deal favours US over South Korean workers.
The deal would be America's biggest free-trade agreement since the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico.
Two-way trade between South Korea and the United States totalled about 90 (b) billion US dollars last year, according to Seoul's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
