1. The Republic of Adygea is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. Adygea covers an area of 7,600 square kilometers, the fifth-smallest Russian federal subject by area, and a population of less than 440 thousand people. Adygea is one of Russia's ethnic republics, primarily representing the indigenous Adyghe people, a Circassian ethnic group that form 25% of the Republic's population, while ethnic Russians form a majority at 60%, and with minority populations of Armenians and Ukrainians.
2. Ancient Zikhs are considered to be the ancestors of the indigenous population of the republic - the Circassians . In addition to the name of zikhi, the ancestors of the Circassians received and other ethnonyms including Kasogs , kerkets. The Caucasian War (Russian: Кавказская война; Kavkazskaya vojna) of 1817–1864 was an invasion of the Caucasus by the Russian Empire which resulted in Russia's annexation of the areas of the North Caucasus, and the ethnic cleansing of Circassians. It consisted of a series of military actions waged by the Empire against the peoples of the Caucasus including the Adyghe.
3. During the Soviet period in Adygea, the Muslim clergy disappeared completely. On February 28, 1985, the chairman of the Council for Religious Affairs Konstantin Kharchev informed the Central Committee of the CPSU that in the Adygei Autonomous Region there was not a single registered association of Muslims. After the collapse of the USSR, the Muslim clergy reappeared.
4. Maykop is the capital and the largest city of Adygea, home to one-third of the republic's population. Maykop (from the Adyghian myequape meaning “valley of apple trees”) was founded in 1857 as a Russian fortress. In the second half of the 19th century the city lost its military importance and in 1870, by the decision of the Emperor Alexander II, was declared as county.
5. Adygea is located in the northern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. The northern part of the region consists mainly of plains while the southern part has mountains. The main river of the region is the Kuban River. The highest mountains are Chugush (3,238 meters) and Fisht (2,868 meters). The mountainous part of Adygea is included in the UNESCO list of the World Natural Heritage. There are many waterfalls, caves, cliffs suitable for mountaineering , gorges, canyons , rivers, alpine meadows, pine and fir forests.
6. The republic is rich in oil and natural gas. Other natural resources include, in mountain part of republic, little fields (mineral deposits) of gold, silver, tungsten, iron, mercury, lead, and zinc. Even though it is now one of the poorest parts of Russia (average income is 12,493.4 rubles per capita), the republic has abundant forests and rich soil.
7. The Caucasus Nature Reserve is a state nature reserve. It is the largest in territory and the oldest, specially protected natural territory in the North Caucasus. Located within the three subjects of the Russian Federation - Krasnodar Territory, the Republic of Adygea and the Karachay-Cherkess Republic .
