"My Sharona" - ORIGINS...
A COMPLETELY LEGENDARY session from Master Wood...
In the late Spring of 1970, TRAFFIC were scorching through the Mid-West as a TRIO... As they approached Detroit on the first week of June, a very young TRAFFIC SUPER-FAN, Master Fieger and his band SKY opened for TRAFFIC... After the gig, SKY & TRAFFIC hung out at the hotel and jammed on acoustic guitars and had some smokes... Not only it was a THRILL for the young musician, but he also managed to leave an impression on Master Wood... Decades later, Master Fieger still remembered observing Master Wood's pre-show preparations backstage...
Master Fieger was determined to succeed and literally wrote a letter to Jimmy Miller, asking him if he ever found himself in Detroit he should come by and listen to their band...To everyone’s surprise, Miller took them up on the offer. While on his way to the west coast, he stopped by Detroit and was very impressed and consequently, offered them a record deal with RCA and flew SKY to London...
My research dictates that it was SPECIFICALLY Master Wood who implored Jimmy Miller to take the letter seriously and go to Detroit, since he already saw the Band's potential...
SKY recorded two albums for RCA in 1970 & 1971 respectively... Jimmy Miller and Andy Johns co-produced both albums at Olympic Studios and made sure that they featured a list of LEGENDARY MASTERS... Master Wright, Master Stewart, Master Price, Master Hopkins, Master Keys were all contributors...
Having said all of that, the MOST SIGNIFICANT contribution, was of course by Master Wood... After recording the "Killing of the Corn" in the June of 1970, he doubles down and re-creates an almost BARLEYCORN-ESQUE AURO, transforming the Master Fieger composition in the dying days of July 1970... He only needed 2 takes with the album featuring this very first take... Master Wood's EVENING BLUE compilation, harbours the second "alternate take"...
Naturally all of this LEGEND, happened long before 1979 when Master Fieger's band THE KNACK, took the world by storm with "My Sharona"...
But there are many other interpretations...
Enjoy Loud...
