Who's ready for a genuine stretch of original Route 66? Let's take a drive on the original Mother Road segment that still remains, bypassed by the interstate but in great condition, in northern Arizona. This section of Route 66 begins at Kingman, Arizona, and heads northeast from Interstate 40, making an arch that passes through towns like Hackberry, Valentine, Truxton, Peach Springs, and the Grand Canyon Caverns, then rejoins I-40 at Seligman -- where, as you'll see, I ran out of daylight. This is a spectacular, lonely stretch of Route 66 that's easy to drive and will give you an idea of what early travelers experienced as they headed west.
