Here are a series of historical bulldog photos dating from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s. They document the injustice inflicted on the bulldog breed once the show crowd took over the direction the breed was going near the end of the 1800s. These people took a once mighty athlete and gladiator and turned it into a physical and genetic crippled within a short period of time. They did this by focusing on breeding for nonfunctional exaggerated traits... a smashed in bully face, a wider chest and a shorter back (which caused their dog's tails to kink and screw).
This same injustice is being inflicted on the modern bulldogge today by 'some' breeders making these exact same mistakes. These people are more interested in producing smashed faced colorful puppies that sell well to uneducated buyers then they are in producing healthy functionally sound athletic adults.
I'm hoping buy sharing this information here and in my other videos on my youtube channel that breeders currently doing this will take notice and do what's right for the breed. Quit taking the breed in the wrong direction. If you aren't breeding for a genetically sound athlete and you aren't physically testing your dogs ability to perform you shouldn't be breeding bulldogges... you should start breeding English bulldogs.
