After nearly three decades on the road together off and on Boston rockers the Swinging Steaks still rival any band out there for sheer talent, songwriting and stage presence. The Swinging Steaks rode a wave of jangly, country tinged rock and roll in the late 1980's that included seminal bands like The Smithereens, Georgia Satellites, Tom Petty, The Del Lords, Del Fuegos, REM and many more. Sure the music was fun, upbeat and often times tongue-in-cheek humorous but what most of these bands shared was upper level songwriting and an awareness of a childhood steeped in the excesses of the post baby-boomer generation. The lyrics many of these songwriters wrote were socially conscious, politically powerful and like a lot of socially stark music stands the test of time. "All in this Together" could be an anthem of our time since not much has changed since 1995 when it was written..." how much can you drink when the whole damn world is dry?" and "how much money can you make before you die, what will you spend it on when there's nothing left to buy" are the catch phrases that vividly shine a light on a nation divided by class. It's important and a damn good listen.
