Date: October 8, 1918
Place: Argonne Forest, France
Story: Alvin C. York, during World War I, found himself and his small group of soldiers behind enemy lines in the Argonne Forest. They managed to capture a number of German soldiers, but soon found themselves under heavy machine-gun fire. Despite the immense danger, York proceeded to take out the machine gun nests one by one, using his rifle and pistol. By the end of the engagement, York, largely single-handedly, killed 25 German soldiers, silenced 35 machine guns, and captured 132 German soldiers. For his outstanding bravery and effectiveness, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
