You’ve never written your own lead sheet before? Well – now is a good time to start! It’s easier than you may think - you don’t need to have much if any theory background or piano skills (though those things are good to have!) For a basic handwritten lead sheet copied and transposed from another source, it’s a piece of cake.
Begin your lead sheet by writing the title, then drawing bar lines to create the layout, generally four measures per line. Then start filling in the chord symbols above each measure, and if you don’t fully understand what every chord symbol means, it doesn’t matter at this point as long as you copy over what you see, exactly. Assuming you’re transposing the chords to another key you will probably want to sit at the piano and simply count how many ½ steps down or up each chord needs to move. Then write slashes (indicating the beats in every measure,) add repeats and double bars as you see in the video, and voila: it's a lead sheet!
The lead sheet in this video actually took only THREE minutes (check the stop watch on my phone. :-) Give it a try, and get the PDF DOWNLOAD above for a summary of the steps.
