Much of the unique quality and appeal of Italy comes from the variety and individuality of Italy's regions. There are twenty regions in Italy and before Italian Unification in 1861, many of these regions were proudly independent. In many areas, that independence can still be felt today.
This is a video of a beautiful landscape that we captured in the province of Matera in Italy. Well known for its capital city also called ‘Matera’, famous for its well-preserved Caves.
Matera is the smaller of the two provinces, which make up the region of Basilicata. It takes up the south-eastern sector and has a stretch of coastline running along the Ionian Sea on the 'instep' of Italy. The landscape is also known for the fact that heavy earthquakes occur every now and then. One of the strongest earthquakes that happened in this area was the Irpinia earthquake in 1980. This earthquake was so heavy that it was felt almost everywhere in the country.
