Do you know the difference between a macaw and a parrot? Yeah, neither did I. I had to Google it. It turns out, macaws are just one of many types of parrots, like a cockatiel, parakeet or cockatoo. So, in other words, all macaws are parrots but not all parrots are macaws. Macaws are colorful, highly intelligent and reside mainly in Central and South America and live in tropical or rainforest environments. With spring exiting and summer entering, what better way to celebrate that relaxed vibe than by painting a bird that always seems to be on vacation. Especially one like this that is sitting on a weathered branch staring off at a private island filled with tall palm trees and rolling rocky hills. The first lesson you’ll learn in this easy painting tutorial is how to blend the background for added depth and atmospheric dimension, using natural and earthy colors to create a tropical ocean feel. The next art tip you’ll learn is how to apply a gradient in the water ripples for movement in the ocean water and how to add texture to the sand with a dabbing or stippling brushstroke. Then, after drawing basic shapes to create your bird and branch, you’ll apply a simple flat color for the base coat to work from. Next, you’ll learn to create realistic looking dimension with properly placed highlights and shadows, followed by layering colors to give your colorful winged-creature texture and body to its feathers, tail, head, and beak, creating a realistic 3-D effect like a photograph. The next step is to paint beach flowers that represent the plumeria species of plants that thrive in warm climates. You'll use the same layering technique building vibrant colors off of a simple base coat to establish depth in the delicate petals. You’ll be excited to see how easy it is to make your bird come alive with just a few colors, strokes, and outlines. You’ll finish up this fun painting by signing it with your own unique signature. You can personalize this beach painting any way you want; add other birds, crustaceans on the beach, such as a starfish or conch, or you could put marine life in the water, such as a mermaid, dolphin or shark, or you could even put a boat or cruise ship in the water. You can change the flowers to resemble any tropical flower that you would like, such as, bird of paradise, lily, lotus, Jasmin or blue passion. You can create a more dramatic ocean with larger waves or a more dramatic sky by painting a sunset or sunrise, or you could even use these same techniques with other mediums, whether it’s watercolor, oil, or gouache. This is a painting inspired by the power of imagination, so feel free to use yours! Using only 3 brushes and 7 colors we'll create this conversational masterpiece that is sure to compliment any décor. Not just a realistic beautiful painting, but an easy painting for beginners. So, let's get painting and let's get sipping!
