On Saturday, June 24, 2023, the China Earthquake Networks Center reported that a magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred in Beibu Gulf.
According to preliminary data, the quake hit at 3:07 am local time and was located at a shallow depth of 20 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.
The epicenter was 38 kilometers away from Weizhou Island in Beihai City, Guangxi. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data
