Love comes in many different forms. The love you feel for your friends is going to be different than the love you feel for romantic partners. But are there features that can be found within all forms of love? The philosopher Erich Fromm believes so.
Fromm believes that these four elements are care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge. Care is similar to labor, while responsibility means taking on the problems that your loved ones have as your own. To respect someone means to acknowledge their individual autonomy, and knowledge refers to getting to know them out of concern for their emotional health.
Fromm also comments on how love is motivated by a desire to paradoxically become a single entity while remaining as two independent individuals. #philosophy #erichfromm #love
