Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure. A catheter is inserted into the patient's abdomen and carries the dialysate in and out of the body. The dialysate helps filter waste, chemicals and extra fluid from the tiny blood vessels in the abdominal cavity's lining. After 4 to 6 hours, the waste product solution drains into a sterile collection bag. After completion of the procedure, a few hours of hospital stay is needed to monitor recovery. The doctor may prescribe tests to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.
