Wai-O-Tapu thermal area is a part of the Taupo volcanic zone and it covers 18 sq kilometres. It formed approximately 160,000 years ago. Wai-O-Tapu means "sacred waters", is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone.
