Why Do We Worship Idols?
If we delve deeply into our ancient Upanishads, it would become obvious that though they were supposed to be religious texts, they were founded on scientific principles. This science is also applicable to the long tradition of worshipping idols.
An idol is a symbol, and human cognition is based on symbols. Whatever we hold in our hand is a symbol. The currency note or coin is a symbol of monetary power, which itself is invisible. The mind cannot operate in a realm of emptiness, it functions through symbols.
Hinduism propagates idol worship more than any other religion. Researchers say that this was initiated for the purpose of increasing concentration during prayers. According to psychiatrists, a man will shape his thoughts as per what he sees. If you have three different objects in front of you, your thinking will change according to the object you are viewing. Similarly, in ancient India, idol worship was established so that when people saw the idols, it was easy for them to concentrate, realize their potential spiritual energy, and meditate without any mental diversion.
