The word assassin is one that instantly conjures up a number of menacing images into the minds of those who hear it. However, the story of the original assassins, the Nizari Ismaili State, paints somewhat of a different, more nuanced picture, that of a small state made up of members of a persecuted religious minority, doing their best to defend themselves against their far more powerful enemies, while avoiding all out war whenever possible.
