The World Sits on my Toenail: Visvaroopa | Manjunath Kamath, Bhajju Shyam and Santosh Kumar Das in conversation with BN Goswamy, introduced by Sanjoy K Roy, and Anubhav Nath
Three artists have re-imagined the Visvaroopa based on nature and her elements. There’s an amalgamation of Bhajju Shyam’s Gond, Santosh Kumar Das’ Mithila and Manjunath Kamath’s signature style. This is a result of multiple conversations with the artists and was initiated over a two-week long workshop in Delhi. The artists worked extensively, lending their signature styles to this artwork that measures 8 feet in its width and 12 feet in its height and is made on Wasli paper, mainly using inks. The artwork has a sublime presence. Uniquely, this work is truly a collaborative work where the styles of the three artists are intertwined to the extent that it is difficult to make out where one begins and the other ends. This is not a directional work where one artist has guided the others to create the artwork – truly, a first in Indian contemporary art. This artwork reaffirms Ojas Art’s commitment to the indigenous arts and will be noted for being a true corroboration of both the indigenous and mainstream contemporary.
Manjunath Kamath works in diverse mediums – painting, drawing, digital art and terracotta. In 2015, the Scad Museum of Art, Savannah hosted his solo show. The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Sacred Art in Belgium, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi have his works in their collections. He was also a part of Ojas Art’s ‘Expressions at Tihar,’ ‘Freedom to March,’ and ‘Conference of the Birds’.
Bhajju Shyam is a Gond artist whose best-known work, The London Jungle Book, is a visual travelogue of his 2002 visit to London. He is the first Gond Artist to be conferred with the Padma Shri and he has been a part of 20 books which have cumulatively sold 100,000 copies.
Santosh Kumar Das’ works are in the The Art Institute of Chicago, Oberlin Museum, Ethnic Art Foundation, USA, Mary C Lanius Collection, Denver and Devi Art Foundation, Delhi. His best-known work is the Gujarat Series. In 2017, Tara Books published, ‘Black,’ his autobiographical style book. In 2019 he had his first solo show in India, titled Rerouted Realities, curated by Kathryn Myers.
