Thousands of protesters in support of Palestinians have gathered around the world as Israel intensified its strikes on Gaza in retaliation for the Hamas assaults on Israel.
Israel has told the United Nations that more than a million people living in northern Gaza should relocate to the south of the Palestinian territory within the next 24 hours.
The UN called for the order to be rescinded on humanitarian grounds. “The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded, avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation,” said Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN secretary-general.
