French artist Gustave Doré produced hundreds of illustrations used in Bibles of many languages in Nineteenth Century. The prints were immensely successful and influenced popular culture. His biographer, Joanna Richardson, wrote: “Doré's illustrations of the Old Testament remind us, above all, of the God of Wrath: of massacres and murders, decapitations and avenging angels.”
