In a significant move, Pakistan's Prime Minister has proposed a barter system to enhance trade relations with Russia.
Shehbaz Sharif met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajikistan President Kohir Rasulzoda, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Wednesday to enhance bilateral relations, focusing on economic cooperation.
During his discussions, PM Shehbaz Sharif proposed to President Putin to strengthen trade relations with Pakistan and offered the Tajik leader the use of Karachi port for this purpose. Additionally, President Mirziyoyev and PM Shehbaz pledged to enhance cooperation in trade, connectivity, defense, security, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
The prime minister is on a two-day visit to Astana to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council, Heads of State and SCO Plus summits.
On his X account, he posted, “Had a cordial meeting with President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation on the sidelines of SCO meeting in Astana today. We exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in multiple areas of mutual interest. We also discussed the regional and international issues.”
With this, Putin mentioned that during their earlier meeting in Samarkand at the SCO summit, they discussed ways to improve relations between Pakistan and Russia.
He said that Pakistan and Russia had friendly relations that had improved due to trade connections. Putin also mentioned that both countries could work together more in energy and agriculture and expressed his willingness to cooperate with Pakistan on food security.
Pakistan's ties with Russia have been growing and strengthening in recent years. Both nations have shown a mutual desire to enhance their bilateral relations and are committed to exploring new areas of cooperation.
