The Midlander, promoted by Tyseley-based Vintage Trains, would see 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' return to Birmingham New Street for the first time since the 1960s. The railtour, on the 28th June, would also be the first time steam had run between Birmingham and London Euston non-stop with the tour making use of Tyseley's Range Extending GUV water carrier.
The video starts at Harrow and Wealdstone, and with 46233 blasting south through the suburbs of London, at it's limited top speed of 75mph.
After catching the next train into London Euston, we finally managed to see this wonderful machine up close. Having had a close look at 46233, the locomotive was dragged out of Euston by class 47 47773 as far as Willesden, where 46233 would haul the 11 coach load to Southall for servicing. We catch up with 46233 once again passing through Ealing Broadway en-route to Southall, though without a tripod - a result of a last second reposition...
The return would not head back into Birmingham New Street, but instead would return to Tyseley via Nuneaton and Coleshill Parkway, and the two cameras capture 46233 in full flight once again as it powers past the gallery of photographers on the bridge.
