STORYLINE
Violence has continued unabated Wednesday in the Middle East on the first day of President George W Bush's regional visit.
An Israeli strike in northern Gaza killed two Palestinians and injured four others, according to Palestinian security officials and medical officials.
The Israeli army said it targeted militants in the area firing projectiles at the rocket-scarred southern Israeli city of Sderot.
Members of the Hamas-allied Popular Resistance Committees told Hamas television that members of their group were discharging firearms at them before the Israeli strike.
The Israeli army said they fired a projectile from the ground but declined to give further details.
In recent weeks, Israel has stepped up its airstrikes and tank-fire attacks against Gaza militants who fire rockets into southern Israel on a daily basis.
Meanwhile Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip bombarded southern Israel with rocket and mortar fire on Wednesday, striking a house in a border town of Israel and Gaza.
Television footage showed a rocket being launched from Gaza into Sderot, causing minor damage.
At least one person was take away to hospital to be treated for shock.
Bush landed in Tel Aviv around midday (10:00 GMT).
His schedule for his three-day visit to Israel and the West Bank does not include stops in or near the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Islamic Hamas militants who are not a party to negotiations.
The US President will also visit Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt during his eight day tour of the Middle East.
At the November peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland, Israel and the Palestinians pledged to reach a final agreement by the end of the year, before Bush leaves office.
But negotiations have made little headway, marred by Israeli construction plans on disputed territory, sustained Israeli military attacks in Gaza, which have resulted in the deaths of nearly 20 Palestinians in the past week, and the West Bank and Palestinian militant rocket fire from Gaza.
