Join me on an ultra high definition driving tour following Interstate 10 from San Antonio, Texas to Junction, Texas.
I-10 cuts across the widest part of Texas. I-10 is a major east-west interstate that goes from California all the way to Florida. Interstate 10 cuts across the entire southern part of the United States. In most places it is well maintained, and in some places it is a very large freeway, with as many as 24 lanes of traffic in the Houston area which is not included in this video.
I-10 had different names in different parts of the country. Near San Antonio it may also be referred to as the Northwest Expressway or McDermott Freway.
San Antonio is located in Bexar County, Texas. It is an important city in Texas both due to its history and its large population. People often refer to San Antonio as the worlds biggest small town due to the small town feel of the city, but the population of San Antonio has been booming.
San Antonio played an important role in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico, and is the home of the Alamo. The Alamo was a mission that was later used as a fort in the Battle of the Alamo. Some of the missions in the San Antonio area have been designated UNESCO world heritage sites.
San Antonio is also referred to as Military City USA due to the number of military bases located in and around the city such as Fort Sam Houston or Lackland Air Force Base.
San Antonio is very centrally located in Texas. It will probably at some point expand with Austin into one large metroplex similar to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. San Antonio has easy access to South Texas, also referred to as the Valley, and to West Texas. On this drive we will be going to West Texas. There are many small towns along the route, but the next major city is El Paso, 550 miles (885 km) west. So its important to start of with a full tank of gas and grab plenty of snacks before we start on this drive!
From San Antonio we will then go to Junction, Texas. Junction, Texas is the county seat of Kimble County. Unlike San Antonio which has a population of well over a million people, Junction is a small town of just over two thousand people. On the way to Junction, Texas we will also drive through Kerrville, Texas. Junction benefits from having the highways cut through. It is a popular spot for 18 wheeler drivers to fill up their tanks and take a break. One of the truck stops even has a row of Tesla superchargers.
The area surrounding San Antonio and Kerrville is often referred to as the Texas Hill Country, because of the soft rolling hills in the area. It can be very pretty, and is a popular location for weekend getaways and bed and breakfasts. The area was settled by German and Czech immigrants to the United States that came over in large waves of immigration in the 19th century.
I hope you enjoy this scenic drive along Interstate 10 westbound from San Antonio, Texas to Junction, Texas. This drive will show rural America.
