One of the many ways that helps us understand history better... is studying the art of a particular time period.
Our Yim Yoon-hee joins us today... with a look at some works from the Joseon Dynasty.
Yes, if you want to get a better sense of the Joseon era, you might take a look at rare laquerware inlaid with mother of pearl.
But you′ll get a fuller sense of the time if you also view works by some of the top Joseon painters, as well as later pieces showing the progression of time and style.
Have a look at the first exhibit.
One of the most precious treasures from the Joseon Dynasty -.... laquerware inlaid with mother of pearl.
The shimmering works of art were most commonly made during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, and few authentic relics remain in Korea.

″The historical trend was to use motifs to make memorable paintings and drawings that can be appreciated in the future.″
The Horim Museum has recently gathered a collection of 90 pieces of Joseon Dynasty laquerware,... and they′re now on display for the people of Korea to enjoy.
Across the river, another museum is offering a look at a different aspect of the Joseon Dynasty′s art culture.
These timeless paintings open a window into peaceful, serene settings.
Works by legendary artists such as Kim Hong-do and Jeong Sun paved the way for modern and contemporary painters such as Cheongjeon Yi Sang-bom and Sojeong Byeon Kwon-sik .

″Cheongjeon Yi Sang-bom′s works are similar to something you would see from a camera′s angle. On the other hand, Sojeong Byeon Kwon-sik′s works transform the scene.″
30 masterpiece paintings done by artists of different styles, and from different periods in time, come together for this unique look into Korea′s history of painting.
The paintings we just saw are done by some very important artists.
These artists became legendary for their landscape paintings.
This exhibition was set up by collectors who over the past 60 years went around finding very rare paintings by these legendary painters.
These are works by artists that the Korean public is probably very familiar, as they′re considered some of the most important painters from the era in Asia.
But this exhibition looks to give further insight to these artists.
Last year there was some big news about a Goryeo Dynasty Laquerbox that was returned to Korea from Japan.
How did that piece change the way we think about laquer art?
That particular Goryeo Dynasty laquerbox is believed to be one of only 8 still in existence.
There are some people who believe art works from the Joseon Dynasty, especially things like these laquerware boxes were very simple in design.
But this exhibition aims to prove that it was actually very complex.
Laquerware from the Joseon Dynasty was very colorful, and had intricate patterns and designs, using a combination of mother-of-pearl, abalone shells, and ox horn sheets.
