Kristi visits with Alyssa Cox, Wolfe County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences to discuss how to talk to your children about body image.
In a society where media outlets circulate photo-edited pictures and set an unrealistic standard for beauty, it can feel difficult to raise children to not compare themselves to such images. Hearing a child talk negatively about their body is heartbreaking. It is important to address these conversations in a way that will support a healthy, growing mind and body. We all have moments when we feel better or worse about our bodies. Whether talking about yourself or your child, having good health, not the number on the scale, should be the goal. Be sure to include other family members and adult friends in conversations about prioritizing health over weight. Our response to children’s negative feelings can help minimize lasting negative impact. Practicing active listening, taking the focus off weight, and seeking support for making changes to support healthy habits for everyone are all part of raising a confident and healthy child.
