The Taliban have placed harsh restrictions on women ever since they took back control 17 months ago, keeping them out of government employment, secondary and higher education, and parks. According to spokesman Farhan Haq, the UN group that arrived on Monday comprises Amina Mohammed, the deputy secretary-general, and Sima Bahous, the executive secretary of UN Women. Senior UN Department of Political Affairs employee Khaled Khiari will also be present. Before heading to Afghanistan, the delegation attended discussions about women's and girls' rights and sustainable development in a number of countries in the area, the Gulf, Asia, and Europe. Following the Taliban's ban on NGOs working with Afghan women in late December, some organisations had to halt their operations.
