In 1982 an Italian banker called Roberto Calvi was found hanging by the neck beneath Blackfriars Bridge. A verdict of suicide was recorded by the police at the time but it was later established that he would not have been able to hang himself in such a way, with bricks tied around his ankles and $15 000 stuffed into his pockets on his own. It must have been done with the help of a boat.
Roberto Calvi was dubbed God's Banker because of the association of the Vatican with the bank of which he was chairman, Banco Ambrosiano.
Even more strangely two days after his death his secretary was found to have jumped out of an upstairs window and died after leaving a suicide note, but it all seemed a bit suspicious and experts believe it was the work of the mafia after Calvi was on the run because of money he owed them.
No one was ever convicted of his murder although five men were tried and let off for lack of evidence in 2005.
The bridge itself dates from 1869. This was rebuilt after the original, made of Portland stone 100 years earlier was in need of repair. It was named after the order of Blackfriars who had a monastery nearby and the alcoves dotted along it at intervals are a homage to the pulpits in a church. Why not have a pint at the Blackfriars Pub at the end. It's a beautiful place with good ales and interesting interiors.
