Ports are critical nodes for trade and commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean. But the same features that make them attractive for business, also make them targets for organized crime, which uses port infrastructure to smuggle drugs, weapons, and other illicit commodities. Greater regional cooperation will be vital to improve port security, especially in the face of opposition by criminal actors, and China's advances in port ownership that have further hindered transparency. CSIS Americas Director Ryan C. Berg and Research Associate Henry Ziemer outline key challenges facing the region's ports today, and what the United States and partners can do to spur greater port security.
