Beka Munduruku lives in the Sawré Muybu village in the Brazilian Amazonía.
The young Indigenous leader from the Munduruku people is visiting the US with one mission: to ask the Cargill-MacMillan family, the owners of @Cargill Inc., to stop the destruction of their land.
Yesterday was Beka’s first day in the US. She started the day with an in-depth interview with global newspaper The Guardian in Central Park.
Beka then had a vivid conversation about her fight and her hopes with the great Kristy Drutman.
Last but not least, Beka met with NY Senator Liz Krueger, sponsor of the pioneering New York Tropical Deforestation-Free Procurement Act, a US-first legislation intended to ensure that companies contracting with the state are not contributing to tropical deforestation and human rights abuses overseas.
This morning, Senator Krueger and Beka Munduruku released a joint press statement calling on Governor Hochul to sign the bill.
We thank @AmazonWatch for their great support and partnership in this crusade to change the practices of the largest agribusiness in the world.
