Top Reasons for a Facelift - Houston Smith Center

The most common reason for people receiving a facelift procedure is for aesthetic purposes. They want to feel and look younger. They want to remove wrinkles from their face, or eliminate sagging skin on the cheeks or the neck area. The facelift is a relatively simple procedure that Dr. Kevin Smith, founder of Houston’s Smith Center and a board certified facial plastic surgeon, has conducted more than 3,500 times.
After having performed so many of these procedures, Dr. Smith has come across many different reasons for receiving a facelift, medically termed a rhytidectomy. It isn’t always just about aesthetic reasons or an attempt to look younger.
He says that one of the reasons a patient may want a facelift is because they have sustained some type of injury to the face or have facial paralysis. This can cause asymmetry in the face.
“If you have an injury where you’ve damaged a nerve and one side of the face is drooping and the other is not, you can do a facelift in order to help the face be more symmetric,” Dr. Smith says. “That would probably be the most common reason for someone who is not looking for a strictly cosmetic reason to come see you is when they’ve had an injury or a tumor resected where the nerve has been damaged. It might be corrected by supporting those muscles and pulling that skin a little bit.”
